Commission Directive 2015/996 establishes a common noise assessment methods to assess and manage environmental noise in accordance with Directive 2002/49/EC. The methods of assessment will ensure that information on environmental noise and its effects are made available to the public and that action plans are adopted to prevent and reduce environmental noise particularly where exposure levels can induce harmful effects on human health.

Member States are required to use the assessment methods from 31 December 2018 onwards.
