What is the IEMA Mentoring Scheme and who is it for?

The IEMA Mentoring Scheme is a free service designed to pair members who have set their sights on Full or Fellow membership and/or Chartered Environmentalist with someone who has already successfully achieved that goal. It provides a structure of support for up to a period of up to 6 months, and really enables members to connect and share knowledge and experience.

Mentees are matched with a Mentor who has already successfully upgraded their membership and who has offered to help you on your journey towards reaching that same goal. Over 6 months (or less if you are ready sooner) you will have regular calls and e-mail catch ups with your Mentor as they guide you towards your goal. It’s a great way to take the next step in your career with the support of someone who has experienced the finer detail of the process.

Are you ready?

To become matched with a Mentor you must be able to:

  • Commit 1 hour a month of contact time with your Mentor; meetings are mutually arranged once you are matched.
  • Complete all actions agreed between you and your mentor to progress your development.
  • Be prepared to submit your upgrade application at the end of the 6 month timescale.

Testimonial

Here’s a testimonial from Michael Hardisty, an IEMA member who successfully upgraded to Full via the Mentoring Scheme. He explains how and why he values the scheme..

How the IEMA Mentoring Scheme supported me to become a Full member: When I decided to apply for Full Membership of IEMA from Associate, I thought that it would be helpful to have a Mentor to guide me through the process. After a few weeks, John Hill was appointed to mentor me. John’s help in discussing whether to go for MIEMA and CEnv or just MIEMA (I opted for the latter) and in reviewing my application package, especially my short paper, was invaluable. He was also able to point me in the direction of other useful resources, such as IEMA’s Skills Map, and to bolster my confidence ahead of the interview! An unanticipated bonus was getting an insight into John’s own impressive career; it was also heartening to find a fellow sustainability professional who knew his jazz - “nice”.
