EMS - shifting the burden of regulatory inspection?

17th June 2013

Environmental Management Systems (EMS) enable organisations to manage their risks to the environment and demonstrate performance improvement. 3rd party certification of an EMS can provide additional assurance that environmental controls are effectively implemented and build confidence that the organisation is achieving and maintaining legal compliance.

UK environmental regulators are keen to explore whether these systems are sufficiently robust to allow greater use of certified EMS and third party audit within their steps towards lighter touch regulation. Progress in this area would generate financial savings and allow increasingly limited regulator resources to focus on those organisations that pose a greater environmental risk.

In order to progress this work the three UK environment regulators (Environment Agency, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and Northern Ireland Environment Agency) commissioned a report on:
New opportunities to improve environmental compliance outcomes using EMS

Led by Lucy Candlin and Gillian Gibson, two of the authors of the report, this lunchtime webinar gave an overview of the study, its findings and their relevance to business and EMS professionals.
