EIA's role in assessing Fracking proposals UK Experiences
The final EIA QMark webinar of 2014 was on the controversial topic of Fracking (or the exploration and extraction of unconventional hydrocarbons). The wide uptake of such development has the potential to aid the UK’s balance of payments, create jobs and enhance our fuel security. However, it also carries local / regional environment risks, often generates significant community concern and if widely applied has the potential to threaten the UK’s long-term carbon budgets and thus our contribution to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. As such, it is not surprising that the consenting of such developments is proving increasingly controversial and challenging.
As the key environmental assessment tool in the UK’s consenting process, EIA clearly has a key role to play. It falls to environment and sustainability professionals to step into this controversial area to identify the evidence of each development’s likely environmental effects and to go on to evaluate whether they are significant to aid decision-making.
This webinar presented the experiences of three of IEMA’s EIA Quality Mark registrants (Atkins, AECOM and Turley Associates).

Launch of Principles of Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment in the UK
This webinar launched the first edition of ‘Principles for Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment’, prepared jointly by IEMA, CIfA and IHBC.
This webinar was aimed at helping professionals (re)define principles and develop a framework for assessment, especially for those wanting a holistic approach to impact assessment in line with international standards.
