Corporate Sustainability – Deepening our understanding of organisations and purpose

19th November 2020

Uniting the energy of an organisation to drive positive wellbeing impact is at heart of the sustainability challenge. Dr Victoria Hurth set out a model for de-coding corporate organisations in relation to this in our webinar with special guest speakers.

Dr Victoria Hurth outlined some common deep-seated assumptions about how a company relates to the economy and society and whether they can successfully transition to being purpose-driven. Dr Hurth is a Visiting Fellow, University of Cambridge Judge Business School and is also Convenor of ISO37000: (Guidance for the Governance of Organisations). In this webinar, Victoria was joined by guest sustainability leaders including IEMA fellow Paul Pritchard and Will Gardner, sustainability adviser and speaker.

This webinar provided a deeper understanding of organisations and their context for transition. Many useful frameworks of sustainability/ corporate responsibility maturity exist that help us to think about impact. This session considered factors underlying those models and that structure existing organisational decision-making logics (helping or inhibiting our work for positive impacts and outcomes).

IEMA Policy Lead Nick Blyth hosted this session and added a connection to relevant aspects of the IEMA skills map.

“Business enterprises…are organs of society. They do not exist for their own sake, but to fulfil a specific social purpose and to satisfy a specific need of a society, a community or individuals.” Drucker, 1974:39
