The 2015 WWF environmental paper company index reveals greater transparency and more interest in sustainability issues by some of the world's major manufacturers in the sector.
Thirty-one companies participated in the index, up from 25 in 2013, disclosing an ecological footprint of 85 million tonnes of pulp and paper. The NGO evaluated firms' environmental policies and targets as well as environmental performance in the production of newsprint, graphic paper, tissue, packaging and pulp.
Companies were assessed on responsible sourcing, clean production, environmental management systems and reporting. WWF said there had been progress since 2013 in companies that had participated in both indices, with were overall scores increasing in more than 90% of product categories.
