A new ICLEI publication tracks patterns of urban sprawl in Europe. Urban sprawl means the growth of cities and towns - it is a process of modifying urban areas and their hinterlands and represents a challenge to sustainable development. The Urban Sprawl Guide explains the phenomenon as a special feature of urban land-use and identifies the reasons for - and the environmental, economic and social consequences of - sprawl. The guide presents practical experiences with urban sprawl training for local planners and decision-makers. It also includes a collection of guidelines for countering urban sprawl. The publication is currently available in German (an English translation is intended). The brochure can be ordered from [email protected], or it could be downloaded as pdf from the ICLEI website.
