MoD's first stand-alone Report aims to provide an overview of the Department's work on Sustainable Development issues in the areas of UK-based estate management and development, civilian personnel management and equipment acquisition.

The MoD is providing information on sixteen headline themes which have been identified as being of particular relevance to defence activities. MoD's programme for the coming years includes improved data collection systems, the roll out of our environmental management system and the continued integration of sustainable development considerations into procurement.

The Report draws together data provided by the three service organisations [the Royal Navy (RN), the Army, and the Royal Air Force (RAF), the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO), the Defence Procurement Agency (DPA), Defence Estates (DE), MoD Centre and the Trading Fund Agencies.

(For more information see: http://www.mod.uk/index.shtml )

Enviros was commissioned by MoD to conduct an independent verification of the report to provide assurance on the completeness and accuracy of the information presented.

The Report is only available electronically. MoD intends to produce an interim report for 2004/2005 and a full report each financial year thereafter. MoD has been contributing data to the Government's Framework for Sustainable Development on the Government Estate - part of the Sustainable Development in Government (SDiG) initiative managed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) - since its establishment in 2002. Annually Central Government Departments contribute to a cross-government report against the Framework targets.
