Having enjoyed a background in environmental and waste management followed by 31 years in corporate communication, Tim combines a strong scientific and environmental understanding with those of a seasoned management consultant. He has operated internationally for over 37 years.
After reading Environmental Science at Westfield College, London University, where he majored in geology and botany, Tim became one of the first corporate ecologists in the UK with Redland Group (now Lafarge/Veolia). He was then a pioneer, environmental consultant with Environmental Resources Limited (now ERM) - now the largest environmental consultancy in the world. Initially, he specialised in the reclamation of derelict and contaminated land but went on to develop the first models for hydrological management of landfill sites; the first methane capture and utilisation schemes in Europe; associated techniques for the reforestation of landfill sites with the UK Forestry Commission; biological treatment of landfill leachate and monitoring techniques utilising natural food chains.
Using his experience of solid and hazardous waste management, at ERL he advised the Saudi, Kuwait and Bahrain governments on waste collection and treatment, including turn-key, waste management master planning for the Royal cities of Jubail and Yanbu in Saudi Arabia. He also was the author of the original guides for energy recovery from waste and the potential, life-cycle energy savings through recycling materials for the European Commission in 1982.
Tim then spent over 29 years communicating corporate initiatives in the UK and further afield, including 17 years as founder and managing director of Talking People (1991 – 2008) and Wyatt (1987 – 1991, now Towers Watson). He has provided internal communication and employee research services to over 100 clients with some partnerships exceeding over 30 years, including multinationals/household names in the FMCG, financial services, retail, pharmaceutical, (petro)chemical and heavy engineering/manufacturing, as well as public sectors and military.
Since 2008, he has specialised in engaging organisations and their total stakeholder audiences in sustainability initiatives including technologies to conserve carbon, energy in general, water, raw materials while limiting waste emissions with the added advantage of gain-sharing. This has included studies of information and data storage technology for the waste and sustainability areas; ISO 14001 certification; and long-term investment in viable alternative technologies.
In late 2012, he also founded a renewable energy/conservation project in his home community in Suffolk which has now led to the formation of its own OFGEM-registered ESCO and cooperative which successfully raised £20,000 for the communal funding of its first 40KwH of solar PV.
