Once you've chosen your preferred grade of membership you will need to complete your online registration form. Depending on your grade, you may need to sit an exam, submit a written assessment and/or have a peer-to-peer interview with our Assessors.

If your new to IEMA and you need to complete an exam, assessment and/or interview before gaining your professional status, you will be recognised as an Applicant. This simply shows that you are a member of IEMA and are currently working towards your professional membership grade. Upon successful completion of your entry assessment or exam, your status will change within 5 working days after receiving your final results confirmation.

If you can evidence that you meet a condition below then you will be exempt from the relevant exam process as stated:
- Exemption from the Practitioner online exam element if you have completed an IEMA Approved Degree or the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management course within the past 3 years (you will then only need to undertake the Assessment of Competence case study assignment). When you apply, you'll need to select that you are eligible to fast-track and upload a valid copy of your relevant degree certificate.
- Exemption from the Associate online exam only if you have completed the IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management course within the past 3 years. When you apply, you'll need to select that you are eligible to fast-track and upload a valid copy of your course certificate.

For Associate exams, you will receive your membership e-certificate up to four weeks after your exam window has closed. For Practitioner, Full or Fellow assessments, you will receive your membership e-certificate up to four weeks after your final results have been issued to you.

When you apply for Student membership you are asked to provide an expected graduation date. You will be contacted prior to this date to notify you of your next steps - you can upgrade to GradIEMA or AIEMA, depending on your eligibility. You will need to check the entry requirements and the membership standard to confirm which grade you are eligible for. If you chose not to upgrade, your membership grade will change to Affiliate at your next renewal.
All the details of Full membership are available here. In summary, you will need to submit a written paper and then have an online peer-review interview with two Full CEnv assessors, to assess whether you demonstrate the competencies of an IEMA Full member (and/or CEnv).
