Green Finance Strategy provides an opportunity to align financial investment with the challenges of improving the environment and tackling climate change

IEMA strongly supports aligning the financial system towards tackling the sustainability challenge and we welcome today’s publication of the Government’s Green Finance Strategy.

Commenting on the launch, IEMA’s Chief Policy Advisor Martin Baxter said:

The challenge of tackling climate change and transitioning towards a truly sustainable future will require significant investment. It is vital that the financial system is orientated towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions and enhancing our natural assets – the publication of the Green Finance Strategy is a positive step in the right direction.”

“Setting in law a net-zero 2050 target helps demonstrate the UK’s global leadership in tackling climate change. The Green Finance Strategy and the development of sustainable finance standards will help to deliver the significant changes needed across the whole economy to deliver the climate change target and establish the UK as the global leader in sustainable finance.”

IEMA is supporting the collaboration between the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), BSI and the financial services industry in implementing a five-year standards development programme to help the industry define best practice standards for sustainable finance.

IEMA is a member of the Strategic Advisory Group guiding the programme; the programme has reached an important stage this month as public consultation opens on its first deliverable – PAS 7340 – which provides a framework for understanding, evaluating and embedding sustainable finance within organizations.IEMA is also a member of the recently established International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) Sustainable Finance Technical Committee, ISO TC322.
