China Aims for Energy Efficiency

China's President Hu Jintao says the government will focus this year on creating an "energy-efficient and environment-friendly society." Addressing a New Year tea party hosted by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Mr Hu said the government would improve its economic structure, to build an energy-efficient society. The Xinhua news agency quoted the Chinese leader as saying that Beijing would also expand socialist democracy, improve its legal system and advance rural development.
