Dr Shamir Ghumra is Head of Building Performance Services at BRE; the leading science and building solutions organisation in the built environment. BRE has been leading the way in ESG performance of buildings and infrastructure through its BREEAM and CEEQUAL methodologies for decades. Shamir is globally responsible for these pioneering brands and the impact they are having in over 80 countries around the world. BRE Group is owned by a charitable organisation the BRE Trust to ensure the continuation of leading research in sustainable and safer buildings around the globe.

Shamir has a particular focus on ESG finance and is passionate about the context in which we make our ESG based decisions; disclosure itself is not a solution it is a means to provide metrics and metadata to support our analysis. Shamir is also aware of the need for markets to better understand the ‘S’ in ESG and has spent recent years developing market based solutions for Modern Slavery and has worked closely with the Gangmansters and Labour Abuse Authority to help set up the Construction Industry Protocol.

Shamir is one of the founding members of the Supply Chain Sustainability School; a cross industry collaboration to help upskill the supply chain on sustainability matters; the School now has over 130 partners and 50,000 registered users.

Governance is another area Shamir specialises in and as a former member of the Institute of Directors is keen to help shape organisation learning for the ‘G’ in ESG. Shamir was vice-chair of the Leicestershire and South East Midlands Branch of the IoD. Completing the acronym Shamir is also a chartered environmentalist and Fellow of IEMA to further develop the professional bodies approach to competence in a world reaching for Net Zero.

In June 2021 Shamir was appointed Visiting Professor of ESG Performance & Strategy at the School of Architecture, Building, Construction & Engineering at Loughborough University.
