24th January 2023 - 12:30pm - 1:30pm

In 2021, the UK Government published the Environment Act which introduced a new mandatory requirement for developments to provide at least 10% net gain. The requirements are currently scheduled to come into action in November 2023.

This webinar is the first in a series of webinars from IEMA on practical application of the different aspects of biodiversity net gain. The first webinar will be on baselining and design, followed by implementation and stakeholder engagement and finally ongoing management and monitoring.

The first in a series of webinars looking at the biodiversity net gain process. The aim of the session is for delegates to:

  • Understand how the biodiversity baseline for a project is determined using surveying and the DEFRA metric.
  • Understand the design process for biodiversity enhancement on a project including key principles and how these feed into the BNG process.
  • Understand the limitations / challenges of BNG baselining and how design must go beyond metric considerations to fully incorporate biodiversity enhancement (e.g. connectivity, green infrastructure)
  • Learn from a practical example of the above on a UK project that has been delivered. Including lessons learnt and key advice.

Speakers for our webinar include:

  • Anthony Barron, Senior Sustainability Manager, Thakeham Homes
  • Helen Nyul, Group Head of Biodiversity, Barratt Homes
  • Ruth Voigt, Environmental Sustainability Leader, Laing O’Rourke
