New international eco-design standard
The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has published a new guidance standard to help businesses incorporate eco-design into existing management systems.
Based in part on the Spanish eco-design certification standard, UNE 15031, ISO 14006 sits within ISO’s flagship environmental management systems standards family.
The new standard offers organisations a guide on how to implement, document and continuously improve their management of eco-design of products and services, but does not establish environment performance criteria and is not designed for certification.
ISO has also made clear that the standard only applies to product-related environmental aspects that organisations can control and influence.
The standard aims to help businesses to implement eco-design in accordance with ISO/TR 14062, which details how to integrate environmental aspects into product design and development, and IEC 62430 which covers environmentally conscious design for electrical and electronic products.
