Impact Assessment Outlook Journal: Strategic Impact Assessment

Volume 12 of our Impact Assessment Outlook Journal brings together articles on strategic impact assessment to inspire practitioners.

Guest edited by Ellie Askham of the Environment Agency and Josh Fothergill of Fothergill Training and Consulting, both of whom are members of the IEMA Strategic Impact Assessment (SIA) Working Group, it comprises eight articles that outline present practice and challenge practitioners to move their approaches forward and embrace innovation.

The role of SIA is more important now than ever before. It is critical that sustainability is embedded in policy and programme-making, and is used to influence and shape them.

During the next year, the SIA Working Group will develop more content for members, as well as engaging with opportunities to further enhance SIA’s application, including the English review of the planning system and Scotland’s adoption of the fourth National Planning Framework and what this will mean for strategic environmental assessment practice. SIA is adaptable, and we look forward to working with IEMA members and other practitioners to respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by the climate emergency, and the need to develop a circular economy, respond to the biodiversity crisis and address inequalities.
