At IEMA, we take a holistic or ‘big picture’ view of sustainability. We support everyone working to tackle all environmental and sustainability challenges, from climate change and reducing waste, to driving efficiency and managing risk. For us, it includes impact assessment, environmental management and corporate sustainability.

2021 Financial Performance
The UK hosting of COP26 in Glasgow, with the emphasis on the net zero transition and a ‘green recovery’ provided a strong narrative for building back better from the COVID-19 pandemic. Together with the importance of maintaining professional qualifications in an uncertain jobs market and our enhanced digital offering, this helped to ensure that our membership renewals and applications performed well and we exceeded our income budget for 2021. Income increased by over 16% compared with 2020 and we ended 2021 with membership at a record high.
We have continued to develop our services, broadening our policy and practice digital content and skills support for members as highlighted in our 2021 Impact Report. The outlook for 2022 is cautiously optimistic as more and more organisations are taking concerted actions towards a sustainable future, by making commitments to transition to net zero carbon emissions; adopting circular resource management practices; minimising impacts on biodiversity and the natural environment and addressing social impacts. These changes across all business sectors, both public and private, enhances the relevance of IEMA and members. However, we are mindful of the cost of living challenge faced by many people and we offer support and a sensitive approach when needed to members who are struggling.
We are investing in additional services and digital delivery to ensure that members continue to receive a comprehensive service and that IEMA, as the membership body for sustainability professionals, is at the heart of the green jobs and skills delivery landscape.
