Eleven Nuclear Sites Lined up in Consultation

Eleven sites in England and Wales where the new generation of nuclear power plants could be built was unveiled by the government today.

The sites were nominated by companies including EDF E.On and RWE as well as the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Nine are locations that have hosted nuclear stations with the remaining two close to Sellafield in Cumbria. The locations will be included in a national policy statement which will be finalised in 2010.

Developers will need to apply for permission to build the plants under the auspices of the forthcoming infrastructure planning commission. The list of nominations includes Bradwell in Essex Braystones in Cumbria Dungeness in Kent Hartlepool Heysham in Lancashire Hinkley Point in Somerset Kirkstanton in Cumbria Oldbury in Gloucestershire Sellafield in Cumbria Sizewell in Suffolk and Wylfa in Anglesey North Wales.

The nominations are now out for a month-long public consultation.
