NHS – Saving Carbon, Improving Health
The NHS has published a new strategy 'Saving Carbon Improving Health' in which it pledges to help drive change towards a low carbon society.The NHS currently has a carbon footprint of 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year which constitutes 3.2% of total carbon emissions and 25% of public sector emissions in England.
As part of the strategy the NHS has set itself the ambition of achieving a 10% reduction in its 2007 carbon footprint by 2015. The strategy document recommends a number of important actions for the NHS to become a leading sustainable and low carbon organisation.
