WRAP announces CO2 savings

WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) has saved millions of tonnes of CO2 via innovative programmes with partners the organisation announced today (1 October).

In its impact report for 2006 – 2008 ‘Creating a World of Difference’ WRAP revealed that as a result of its work with partners: 2 million additional tonnes of CO2 equivalent were saved each year 4.8 million tonnes less waste is going to landfill each year including more than 3.1 million tonnes of construction material 1.5 million additional households are now committed to reducing their food waste

In addition the UK has: 3.9 million more committed recyclers 10% growth in the recycling sector Since WRAP started work in 2001 the organisation has supported new infrastructure capable of recycling and reprocessing more than 111 million tonnes of waste during its operational life. Another key area of achievement over the two years since 2006 is in plastic bottle recycling.

The additional plastic bottles that can be recycled every year as a result of WRAP’s support would fill 180 Olympic sized swimming pools. WRAP exceeded its objective of recycling an additional 16000 tonnes of plastic bottles a year achieving more than 46000 tonnes. Looking forward WRAP announced the forthcoming launch of a construction commitment in partnership with the industry which aims to halve construction waste to landfill by 2012.
