SDC and IPPR – Tackling Aviation
This report is the result of an extensive Stakeholder Assessment on aviation run by the Sustainable Development Commission and the Institute for Public Policy Research in response to growing concern about the projections for significant increases in aviation volumes. This assessment unlocked a range of views from businesses industry representatives governments academia citizens’ groups and NGOs.
Based on these views the SDC and IPPR put forward a series of recommendations for the government: First to convene a Special Commission charged with compiling an updated evidence base on the economic social and environmental benefits and costs of UK aviation seeking maximum consensus amongst stakeholders.
Secondly to consult the public and key stakeholders on the future of air travel in the UK setting out policy options to stimulate a national debate. Thirdly to incorporate the findings and recommendations of the special commission into the Air Transport White Paper.
Finally they also advise that the proposed expansion at Heathrow should be put on hold until the Air Transport White Paper has been reviewed.
