China's environment 'deteriorating'

A report released paints a damning picture of China's deteriorating environmental conditions and suggests 51 initiatives that could be implemented to improve the situation.The report published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development with the approval of the Chinese government says China has not done enough to prevent pollution of its land water and air. Its key recommendations include the need to make local leaders in China more accountable for their environmental performance. It also suggests introducing market mechanisms such as pollution charges to meet environmental targets.
China is experiencing one of the highest rates of economic growth in the world. However this growth has been accompanied by deteriorating environmental conditions in the air water river and soil said Kiyo Akasaka the OECD's deputy secretary general.
