CEnv: what it means for IEMA Members

05/08/2004

The IEMA has started to process applications for the Chartered Environmentalist qualification but CEnv cannot be awarded until the Society for the Environment has received the Royal Charter and the IEMA has achieved its licence. It is anticipated that the Society for the Environment will award the first set of licences for the award of CEnv towards the end of September 2004.

What Chartered Environmentalist means for IEMA Members

The IEMA is committed to the professional development of its members and as such has worked hard over the past few years with other Institutes as members of Society for the Environment (SocEnv) in the development of the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) qualification.

The petition for a Royal Charter although now granted is due to be signed and sealed in September 2004; this is a significant step forward for the environmental profession generally and a great opportunity for IEMA members.

All Full and Fellow Members of the IEMA should have received an application form to apply for Chartered Environmentalist through the ‘grandparent’ process. The grandparent process is a simplified application process involving a written application but omitting the requirement for interview. If you would like to request a ‘grandparent’ application form email [email protected]. Please note that to be eligible to apply through the grandparent route you must be a Full or Fellow Member.

If you are an Affiliate or and Associate Member you will also be entitled to 'grandparent' rights to Chartered Environmentalist if you achieve Full Membership within 12 months of the IEMA being awarded a licence which is likely to be the end of September 2004.

What happens next?

On receipt of an application the IEMA will assess the application to ensure that the member is able to demonstrate the required 12 units. Units are awarded for academic qualifications and experience. Units are awarded at a rate of 2 units per year of relevant academic study and 1 unit per year of relevant experience. Providing that you are able to satisfy these requirements and you are up to date on CPD the IEMA will forward your application for external review.

Please note that the IEMA will begin to process applications but the Chartered Environmentalist qualification cannot be awarded until the Society for the Environment has received the Royal Charter and the IEMA has achieved its licence. It is anticipated that the Society for the Environment will award the first set of licences for the award of CEnv towards the end of September 2004.
