IEMA responds to Government’s commitment to put nature at the centre of a green recovery

Reforming EIAs must be evidence-based and must recognize the economic social and environmental benefits that EIA delivers. We stand ready to lead progressive reforms of this vital part of planning a greener future.

Responding to Environment Secretary George Eustice’s speech – Nature to be at the centre of green recovery (Green Alliance panel event 20 July 2020) – IEMA Chief Executive Sarah Mukherjee said:

The Institute of Environmental Management and assessment (IEMA) has called for bold and far reaching commitments to strengthen the UK’s approach to a green recovery. As with all government consultations the devil is in the detail. Whilst we have recognised there is potential to make Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) more effective any such review must be evidence-based recognising the economic social and environmental benefits that EIA delivers. IEMA champions the need for a robust and effective EIA system and we stand ready to lead progressive reforms of this vital part of planning a greener future.
