EMAS - the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, is a voluntary initiative designed to improve companies’ environmental performance. It was initially established by European Regulation 1836/93, which has since been updated twice with REGULATION (EC) No 1221/2009 coming into force in January 2010.
The IEMA Acorn Scheme, an officially recognised EMS standard which offered accredited recognition for organisations, is no longer available due to changes to the environmental management standards landscape. The scheme is set to wind down activity for the foreseeable future, so if you are seeking formal recognition of a phased approach to an EMS, check out alternative schemes such as SEREN or Green Dragon.

The EIA Quality Mark is a scheme operated by IEMA that allows organisations (both developers and consultancies) that lead the co-ordination of statutory EIAs in the UK to make a commitment to excellence in their EIA activities and have this commitment independently reviewed. The EIA Quality Mark is a voluntary scheme, with organisations free to choose whether they are ready to operate to its seven EIA Commitments
