IEMA works in one of the most crucial parts of the global economy – sustainability. We are the largest global professional body for individuals and organisations working, studying or interested in the environment and sustainability. As we continue to grow our Senior Communications Officer will be at the vanguard of helping communicate the importance of environmental standards, drive interest and discussion around green jobs and skills, and help increase the influence of the sustainability profession for our 21,000+ members and beyond our 300+ corporate partners.  

This position is a key role in helping us tell a compelling, consistent story with clarity of purpose to enthuse, engage and encourage new members and in turn through working with our members and partners, raise the profile of IEMA to grow the recognition and credibility that the sustainability profession deserves.

You will work daily to help develop high quality PR and content for a range of media, maintain strong relationships with journalists, producers and content developers, and connect them with environment and sustainability professionals from across IEMA and our membership.

The role:  

You will be responsible for the following activities;

  • Develop environment and sustainability communications to engage external audiences across a range of media platforms.
  • Write media releases, reactive statements, Q & As, opinion pieces, etc. for the use in print, broadcast and digital media.
  • Proactively pitch stories and content ideas to journalists, producers and content developers – and grow and maintain strong relationships with these contacts.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal teams to understand key corporate, policy and sector developments, and support all teams in their understanding and use of messaging and content.
  • Search for interesting and inspiring stories within the IEMA Membership and Corporate Partners to bring the sustainability profession to life.
  • Support the development of content across social media, websites, newsletters, members magazine, podcasts, events, policy reports/guides, case studies, blog posts, briefing for staff and members, etc.

The Candidate

Qualifications & Experience: 

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to identify key messages, gather stories and develop content.
  • Proven experience working with external media is essential.
  • Ability to work with colleagues to understand (sometimes technical) subject matter and turn it into simple and targeted communications for specific audiences.
  • Knowledge of core PR/communications principles, techniques and skills, and an understanding of how to use these communications tools to increase the visibility, profile and reputation of an organisation.
  • Flexible approach to work and a strong ability to manage workload with conflicting and time-critical demands.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in the sustainability sector would be a distinct advantage

Person Specification

You may currently be in a PR/communications agency, doing an in-house comms role or working as a journalist. Either way you will have strong attention to detail and know how to make complex topics accessible to a wider audience.

Confident and eager to speak to journalists, producers and content developers to pitch ideas, you will be motivated by seeing your efforts appear in the media and with the knowledge that you are contributing to improving the environment and sustainability.

You will have a desire to play a positive part in the wider team but not be afraid to put your opinions forward.

Place of work:

As this role is UK home based it will be essential that you have reliable home broadband and the ability and motivation to work from home with reduced supervision but as part of a team. There will be the requirement to attend face to face staff meetings and events at various UK locations. Candidates must therefore be based in the UK – all travel can be expensed.
