The Head of HSE&S leads the management of health, safety, environment and sustainability for the business and helps to ensure the delivery of HSE&S excellence across programmes & projects. The role performs as Head of Profession for the HSE&S disciplines for the International Business.

Key Responsibilities
  • Delivery and promotion of Amentum's "Safe Up" EHS programme - leading and supporting initiatives.
  • Engage with all staff, partners and suppliers to ensure their support for the Amentum SafeUp expectations and principles.
  • Lead the promotion of a strong awareness culture for HSE&S.
  • Develop and maintain HSE&S management systems (comprising policies, processes, procedures, etc.).
  • Line manage HSE&S staff as appropriate.
  • Strategic management of HSE&S activities for programmes & projects.
  • Technical management of programme & project personnel in operational roles.
  • Day to day management of HSE&S for business level activities.
  • Report on HSES&S performance to the monthly executive review meetings and to the periodic IMS management reviews.
  • Develop and deliver annual HSE&S improvement plans.
  • Undertake monitoring and reporting of programme & project HSE&S performance and assist in the development & implementation of strategic solutions.
  • Manage the investigation, recording and reporting of accidents, incidents, and near misses.
  • Responsible for the professional development of the HSE&S staff ensuring the international business fulfils its requirements in meeting the required corporate HSE&S KPI's and objectives.
  • Ensures adherence to company policies, procedures, and related government regulations and that client requirements are flowed down into appropriate procedures and documents.
  • Interface with the Amentum QA function and play an active role on the HSE&S Functional Area Coordination Team (FACT) Team.
  • HSE&S regulatory interface with appropriate bodies (e.g. HSE, ONR & EA).
  • Provide a focal point for internal and external matters relating to HSE&S Compliance.
  • Oversee the generation and maintenance of company HSE&S procedures and records ensuring compliance with the latest customer, industry and national standards/specifications.
  • Drive initiatives through effective metrics and performance measures collected from the operations which support a culture of continuous improvement at all levels.
  • Undertake internal and external safety and environmental audits and monitor our activities through a corrective and preventative action programme.
  • Ensure that the LFE programme and trend analysis is used as an input to the HSE&S Improvement Plan(s).
  • Link with US Corporate HSE&S requirements, processes and procedures.
  • Support the Technical and Compliance Director/VP in discharging their company HSE&S responsibilities.
  • Lead and support in supplier evaluations, business development and tender activities.
  • Manage the central HSE&S legal compliance and aspects registers.
  • Support the company in pursuance of occupational health and mental health excellence; and lead the Company's mental health and well-being steering group.
  • Lead and provide all corporate centre workers with specific HSE&S inductions.
  • Carrying out due diligence checks to ensure premises HSE&S management practices are legally compliant.
  • Champion office sustainability initiatives and awareness. Company lead for the Carbon Net Zero Plan.
  • Support the implementation of the company's incident reporting tool and its ongoing functionality.
  • Lead monthly HSE&S meetings with the HSE&S personnel.
  • Foster good collaborative relations with all stakeholders.
  • Deputise for the Technical and Compliance Director/VP.
  • Lead the preparation and submission of Company's annual ROSPA return.
  • Ensuring appropriate reviews and audits of the HSE&S Management System are carried out at an appropriate frequency in order to ensure that employees are directed to take action compliant with HSE&S statutory requirements.
  • Ensuring that safety and environmental inspections and audits are undertaken.
  • Ensuring records are kept of key HSE&S performance indicators, records of near misses and actions to be taken and restrictions/authorisations and compliance actions imposed by Clients/Regulators.
  • Ensuring a system is maintained to identify, implement and record safety and environment training for staff.
  • Ensuring that arrangements are in place for monitoring and review of safety and environment, including inspections, audits, leadership walks, training and reporting.
  • HSE&S requirements are effectively communicated through site inductions and manage HSE&S competency programmes.
  • Effective control of contractors in matters pertaining to HSE&S performance.
  • Suitable risk assessments exist and that risks are suitably minimised.
  • Suitable and thorough accident investigations, knowledge sharing between sites and appropriate corrective and preventive actions are completed.
  • Overall management of the Company's occupational health programme (inc. radiological protection, asbestos, chemicals, Legionella etc.).
  • Support the business in any other reasonable tasks.

Requirements:

  • This is a senior position which requires the incumbent to have solid and proven experience of environmental, health, safety management in in high risk & heavily regulated environments such as within the Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Defence, Heavy Engineering or Power sectors. Knowledge and credible experience of the U.K. nuclear and environmental regulators.
  • Ideally Degree Educated in an EHS related subject /Post-graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in an EHS related subject
  • Hold current NEBOSH Certificate in Health & Safety

Due to the nature of the role and our clients, it is important that all applications have resided in the UK for at least 5 years

We need all the candidates to have BPSS clearance as a minimum, with a security clearance (SC) or have no issue in obtaining SC. A prerequisite for SC is that the applicant has lived in the UK for at least 5 years.
