Businesses will be able to benefit financially from reducing energy demand at peak periods after the launch of a service by electricity supplier SmartestEnergy.
Businesses signing up to the demand side response service will receive payments in return for reducing consumption when demand on the grid is high. They will receive payments for taking part even if they are not called on to cut demand, according to SmartestEnergy.
The firm will undertake technical set up, testing of equipment and software, as well as performance monitoring and payments on behalf of participants. Businesses will be able to reduce demand in several ways, including powering down part of their operations, shifting them to a different time of day or generating their own energy onsite.
"Many customers are already exploring energy efficiency and we want to help them realise commercial benefits," said chief executive Robert Groves. EnerNOC is providing the software.
