The SiLC (Specialist in Land Condition) Register
Further information can be found at http://www.silc.org.uk/
A registered Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC) is an individual able to demonstrate a broad awareness, knowledge and understanding of land condition issues. A SiLC can give impartial and professional advice in their field of expertise and has an awareness of the roles of individuals working in land condition across the range of suitable professional bodies that make up the PTP and other related professions. Registered individuals are recognised for being competent to sign off a completed Land Condition Record (LCR). Initially SiLC registration was designed to support the use of the LCR, launched by the Urban Task Force in 1999. SiLC is now becoming recognised as a much broader qualification. It is the only Professional Qualification of its type for experienced individuals working in Land Condition.
The SiLC Professional and Technical Panel (PTP), was established to develop and implement the SiLC qualification. The PTP consists of representatives from supporting professional bodies to act as the ruling committee in all registrations. The Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (iema) is the secretariat for the registration scheme on behalf of the SiLC PTP.
Applicants for SiLC registration have to be Chartered, or equivalent, members of their professional body with not less than eight years experience relating to land condition. They have to take an examination covering several specialist areas and be interviewed by a panel of assessors drawn from the register. An individual who becomes registered will be a "Specialist in Land Condition" and be known as a SiLC.
Training Days for Registration occur twice a year in June and late November/early December.
Assessments for Registration occur twice a year, the open book paper is sent out for 4 weeks of February or 4 weeks of August, interviews are held in April and October respectively.
Annual Forum in January or February, presents an opportunity for SiLC and other professionals to meet informally before listening to guest speakers followed by a panel question time.
