Code of Practice for EIA Practitioners

Individuals whose names are included on the EIA Register shall:

  1. Exercise reasonable due diligence, honesty, and objectivity in the performance of their duties. No statement should be included in an Environmental Impact Statement or Impact Assessment Report which the author believes to be untrue, or which is misleading due to the omission of material information.
  2. Acknowledge their limitations of competence and not partake in any contract or duties which he or she knows is beyond their professional capability.
  3. Avoid their professional independence and objectivity being influenced by a conflict of interest, and make all relevant parties aware where there is such a conflict.
  4. Not accept anything of such value from an employee, client, customer, supplier or business associate that could impair or be presumed to impair his or her professional judgement.
  5. Not endorse information supplied by a client or other organisation unless reasonable steps have been taken to establish its validity.
  6. Ensure that where incomplete baseline data is used in an assessment and/or uncertainty exists in the predictions or results of an assessment this is so indicated in their Environmental Impact Statement or Impact Assessment Report.
  7. Ensure that all work undertaken be carried out in accordance with applicable standards and practices where available.
  8. Ensure that when proffering advice to a client other than his or her employer that they are covered by an appropriate level of professional indemnity insurance, or are otherwise appropriately indemnified against negligent professional actions.
  9. Not participate in unsupported EIA related work where they are not fluent in the agreed language of the EIA. Support in these terms means that the practitioners have at appropriate times available to them a person with the necessary technical language skill.
  10. Continually strive for improvement in the proficiency, effectiveness and quality of their services using a combination of training and practical work, and give reasonable assistance to candidates wishing to enter the profession.
  11. Maintain a written log of all EIA related work carried out and training undertaken, which should be available on request by the 'Registration Council'.
  12. In the event of any alleged breach of this code, registered individuals shall co-operate fully and without reservation in any inquiry formal or otherwise, or when called upon to appear before the Disciplinary Committee.
