Abstract:One in five of the world’s population - two-thirds of them women - live in abject poverty: on the margins of existence, without adequate food, clean water, sanitation or healthcare, and without education. That is 1.2 billion people whose lives are blighted by poverty, robbed of their dignity in a world of growing wealth and material plenty.
