Abstract:

Liftshare was founded in 1997, based on Mitfahrzentrale (the German car-sharing scheme). With the UK having the worst congestion, longest commuting time and second highest road utilisation in the EU there was a clear environmental and personal cost-benefit to establishing a similar scheme in the UK.
