Abstract:Requiring all inland and coastal waters to reach "good status" by 2015 the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) has been described as ‘the most significant piece of water legislation for a generation’ (Environment Agency, 2004). The Water Framework Directive provides a holistic approach to the management of Europe's water bodies. For the first time plans (River Basin Management Plans) are to be made to provide a co-ordinated framework for the sustainable management of water resources which belong to the same ecological, hydrological and hydrogeological system (river basin district).
