Title:Climate change: Carbon offsetting - Code of Best Practice
Organisation:Defra
Issued:Mon 10 March 2008
Deadline: 31 March 2008
Status: CLOSED Consultation is closed for comments
Synopsis:The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced the framework for the Code of Best Practice for Carbon Offsetting. Initially only Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs), that are compliant with the Kyoto Protocol, will be eligible for approval under the Code. However, as part of this announcement, the Secretary of State has also set a challenge to industry to develop a standard for good quality Voluntary Emissions Reductions (VERs) so that those voluntary credits meeting an industry standard could be included under the Code in the future, subject to the verification of their robustness. The draft Code has been developed by the appointed accreditation body - AEA. We (Defra) would encourage you to send any comments on the planned procedures outlined in the document by 31st March 2008.

The IEMA are planning to provide a response to this consultation, but because of the close deadline date, we are not looking for comments from members to assist us. However, if any Member wishes to provide a response, please do so following the instructions on the website below:
