| Synopsis: | This consultation deals only with how SEPA handles the small proportion of controlled activities that would result in adverse impacts to the water environment. It explains how SEPA takes into account the benefits expected to result from a proposed activity; and the adverse impacts of the proposal, including its consequences for the interests of third parties. |
The consultation can be found on SEPA's website at:

Under the Water Environment (Controlled Activities)(Scotland) Regulations 2005, anyone wishing to carry out a controlled activity, such as abstracting water from the water environment, undertaking engineering works in the water environment or discharging pollutants into the water environment requires an authorisation before they can do so.
Many applications made to SEPA are for controlled activities that will not result in significant adverse impacts on the water environment. But guidelines are required for assessing those activities which will have an adverse impact.
The IEMA are not planning to respond to this consultation. If any individual or corporate member wishes to respond, please do so following the instructions on the above website. The deadline for responses is 11 April 2008.
