  • Is the balance right between economic, social and environmental aspects? If not, how would you like it changed?
  • What, if anything, is missing?
  • Have we got the roles and responsibilities right?
  • Have we identified the costs and benefits correctly?
  • For the comprehensive package we need for marine fisheries, which bits do you agree with? Why?
  • Background to consultation

This consultation paper sets out Defra's vision of the fisheries sector in 20 years' time. Defra wants this consultation paper to move us all towards a contract for the future of marine fisheries which will:

  • make it clear what we are all trying to achieve
  • set out the relative properties of delivering economic and social benefits and protecting the environment
  • explain the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders in achieving sustainability
  • Defra are focusing on activities in England and English waters. However, to encourage more sustainable consumption Defra has a wider interest in encouraging good management of the msrine environment. Therefore it is vital that cooperation at the English, UK and international level to stimulate change is undertaken.
