Abstract:Geest Plc is a main supplier of branded fresh and prepared food products to all the major supermarket chains in the UK. This article is a case study of the impact on the company of the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997. It assesses the use of the Packaging Recovery Note (PRN), the economic instrument associated with the Regulations, and the impact of the UK Government's decision to increase recovery and recycling targets in 2001 above those first legislated for.
