Abstract:The EDF Energy Environmental Impact Award 2006, in association with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, recognises companies that achieve positive environmental impact through their operations and activities.
This selection of case studies in these pages are taken from the ‘Big Ticks’ awarded through the EDF Energy Environmental Impact Award, recognising the measurable positive impacts that these companies have had on the environment.
These stories highlight the activities of companies that are making the most of the links between good environmental practice and successful business performance – from the shopping centre that saved nearly £90,000 through efficiency savings to the small IT asset disposal business in Essex that re-used or recycled 100 per cent of its equipment, increasing its turnover by over 250 per cent in ten years.
This year witnessed not only the highest number of entrants to the Awards, but also a record-breaking number of Big Tick winners. Of those, Co-operative Financial Services (CFS) was selected as the ‘Example of Excellence’ at Business in the Community’s Annual Award for Excellence Gala Dinner on 12 July 2006. By taking the lead on tackling climate change and driving the market for sustainable energy technologies, CFS has paved the way for other companies to bring those developments into the mainstream.
The EDF Energy Environmental Impact Award is part of Business in the Community’s Awards for Excellence. Business-led and rigorously assessed, the Awards recognise best practice and focus on impact and evidence of results. This year’s Awards for Excellence were held in association with the Financial Times, and sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry. The Awards are independently judged, and assured by Arthur D Little.
