This is the first in the series of 'practitioner' journals publsihed by the IEMA, written by Ken Fletcher of AEA Technology and John Brady, Editor of the environmentalist.

The guide gives a comprehensive account of the key features of the levy package and associated national and international initiatives. It also offers a thorough introduction to the thinking that businesses should adopt on climate change agreements and emissions trading. The guide contains an instruction manual on The Emissions Calculator. Also included are: an algorithm for calculating the net unit costs of climate change investment and a risk assessment tool for exploring the threats and opportunities of climate change policies in the round. A comprehensive list of references is provided.

The first section is written for senior managers in industry who need to understand the financial implications of climate change policies.

The second and third sections should also be of interest to senior managers. They explain climate change policies in detail and, together with the remaining sections of the guide and appendices, will be of particular interest to financial and technical experts who are responsible for looking at the options open to them to reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Many companies should be able to make substantial savings on their energy bills, increasing both profits and competitiveness.
