Associate Membership

Associate Membership (AIEMA) is the knowledge-based level of IEMA membership for those individuals who have demonstrated a clear understanding of the principles and practices of environmental management and assessment. Associate Membership is achieved by completing either an Open Book Assessment or a certified training course entitling successful candidates to use the suffix AIEMA.

The Associate Open Book Assessment

The open book assessment is held three times per year - February, June and October. Candidates are given a fixed two week period to complete an assessment paper consisting of ten questions.

The criteria for Associate Membership have an even spread across the tools of Environmental Impact Assessment, environmental auditing and Environmental Management Systems. There are three key modules:

  1. Environmental Sustainability
  2. Assessment, Interpretation and Management of Environmental Performance
  3. Environmental Legislation (based on UK legislation at present)

The Associate Membership application pack can be downloaded by clicking the links below. The application pack includes a guide and a registration form for the Open Book Assessment.

The success rate for those who completed an Associate Open book Assessment in 2008 was 81%.

Membership Workshops are held throughout the year in the UK. They provide an opportunity to obtain tips and guidance on how to approach the assessment. These workshops are extremely popular and are FREE to members.

Please see our events page for more information on upcoming workshops or email events@iema.net for further information.

 International Open Book Assessment

The International Open Book Assessment is designed to enable our Members outside of the UK to undertake an Open Book Assessment without the need to refer to UK legislation or undertake a training course.

This assessment will focus on international treaties and protocols with a short essay question on your local legislation. If you have any questions please contact the Membership Team at professional.standards@iema.net

The International open book assessment is now held three times per year - in February, June and October.

Associate Certificate Courses

The alternative method to the Open Book Assessment is to participate on an Associate Certificate course.

These courses have been designed so that even those with a limited amount of environmental knowledge can gain the required level of knowledge for Associate Membership. They are also available in a range of formats to suit your learning style and time constraints: Distance Learning, Part-time Residential or Full-time intensive programmes.
