Environmental Management Systems – Your A – Z guide

How to register

EMAS logo Organisations wanting to participate must follow a number of steps. Simply put, these are:

  1. Implement an EMS that meets the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001
  2. Undertake internal audits, including checks on legal compliance and environmental performance improvement
  3. Prepare an Environmental Statement
  4. Have the Policy, EMS and Environmental Statement independently validated by an EMAS accredited verifier
  5. Submit the application with appropriate fee to the EMAS Competent Body using the application form which can be found under the Downloads section of this website.
  6. Make publicly available your environmental statement and promote your environmental credentials. You will then be entered onto the EMAS register.

Organisations are required to renew registration on an annual basis to maintain their place on the register. Please see Article 6 of the EMAS Regulation No 1221/2009 for guidance on re-registration requirements. A copy of the regulation can be found under Downloads (see "Practitioner Information" to the right).
