EA is the European network of nationally recognised accreditation bodies based in the European geographical area. The EA MLA provides a means for goods and services to cross boundaries in Europe and throughout the world.
A certificate or inspection report issued by an accredited body in one country is recognised as equivalent to a certificate or inspection report issued by an accredited body in any of the countries signatories to the EA MLA. The MLA makes accreditation a "passport" which facilitates access to the EU and international markets through co-operation with IAF (International Accreditation Forum).
The scopes of the EU MLA cover:
| Accreditation of certification bodies | Certification of products | EN 45011 (ISO/IEC Guide 65) |
| Certification of persons | ISO/IEC 17024 | |
| Certification of quality management systems | EN 45012 (ISO/IEC Guide 66) | |
| Accreditation of EMAS verifiers | Eco-Management & Audit Scheme (EMAS) | Council regulation 761/2001 of March 2001 |
| Accreditation of inspection bodies | Inspection | ISO/IEC 17020 |
